How to Rekindle Drive After You’ve Made It
Article 4 in the series
Financial freedom creates a unique opportunity to build a deeply fulfilling and meaningful life.
Yet, many of us find ourselves stuck in a comfortable yet hollow existence - a "golden cage".
We feel surprisingly low drive to commit to pursuing purpose - the key element of our fulfillment.
But what ever happened to all that energy and drive that created our wealth in the first place?
Why can't we channel it towards purpose?
Having studied, and directly experienced, this phenomenon for over 13 years, I've identified three barriers that actually block our energy post-wealth:
Safety concerns
Cognitive fog
Inspiration drought
Let's look at each closer to understand what - exactly - keeps us trapped when we should be soaring.
1. Safety Concerns
When we lack motivation after becoming wealthy, the real problem is often feeling unsafe.
This sounds strange - how can someone who's financially free feel unsafe? Yet this is precisely what blocks our energy most often after achieving wealth.
Our brain prioritizes safety over everything else because safety means survival. Before we can focus on giving to others, we need to feel secure ourselves. That's just how we're wired.
Health worries, feeling not enough, unloved and incompetent, fearing rejection, or concerns about family members are all matters of survival. They get prioritized. Our focus and energy are locked on them till they get resolved.
How do we handle these safety concerns?
By respecting them as valuable survival tools. These fears are trying to help us.
We need to deliberately and systematically address each concern - through both practical steps and internal work.
Wealth doesn't automatically fix all our safety concerns. Even financial security doesn't happen by itself when we have money.
Addressing safety concerns takes work, but the reward is worth it. Once we feel secure, we unlock that powerful energy that pulls us toward purpose.
2. Cognitive Fog
Financial success, especially when sudden like a business exit, creates a profound cognitive dissonance.
The beliefs about success and wealth that guided us for years suddenly don't match our new reality.
We realize our trusted map no longer represents our new territory. Lost and confused, we face cognitive fog.
This mental confusion creates two major problems:
It triggers deep discomfort. Many describe it as standing at the edge of an abyss - an existential crisis where everything once solid now feels unstable. Fears and anxiety overwhelm us.
It erases our sense of direction. Our previous goals - building the business, achieving financial freedom - are now accomplished. We're ready for fulfillment but have no instructions for finding it. We have resources but lack a roadmap.
How do most of us respond to this disorientation? We escape. We hit the ease button.
Instead of working through this confusion, we distract ourselves: chasing pleasure and throwing money at the problem.
But money can't solve cognitive fog. Unaddressed, it keeps draining our energy and focus, slowly poisoning our daily existence.
Without a clear internal compass - solid values and clear beliefs which align with reality - we can't direct our energy toward purpose. We lack the clarity, conviction and confidence to take meaningful action.
This uncertainty makes us afraid to leave our golden cage.
Without realizing it, we give up our power, talents and needs. We remain stuck - comfortable but unfulfilled.
3. Inspiration Drought
Inspiration is the spark that ignites our energy. It works like a neurological switch that activates our drive.
When something inspires us, our body releases dopamine and adrenaline – powerful chemicals that fuel our motivation to act.
This biological response explains why inspiration feels physically energizing - it literally prepares our body for meaningful action. We feel rejuvenated and deeply connected to what makes life exciting.
This neurochemical rush makes us feel more alive and engaged than almost anything else.
These feelings aren't just pleasant extras – they're essential ingredients for fulfillment. Without inspiration, our energy remains blocked, we miss out on joyful experiences, and our potential stays dormant.
The most successful creators and innovative thinkers don't passively wait for inspiration to strike. Instead, they actively cultivate sources of inspiration:
They immerse themselves in thought-provoking books and pursue emotionally stimulating experiences.
They regularly explore unfamiliar places and engage with art and cutting-edge technology.
Most importantly, they deliberately surround themselves with inspiring people, whose stories, achievements, and fresh perspectives spark new exciting possibilities.
Without actively seeking inspiration, we can't reliably ignite our energy, resulting in chronic energy deficiency.
This persistent energy shortage triggers our brain's danger response, intensifying fears that drive us deeper into our existing anxieties and keeping us locked in our golden cage.
The Root Cause Is Fear
Whether we stay in our golden cage due to safety concerns, mental fog, or inspiration drought - at its core, it's fear that keeps us there. Something freezes us, drains our energy, and blocks our drive.
The golden cage feels deceptively safe, so we remain inside.
But fear doesn't fade - over time it solidifies. The longer we avoid facing it, the stronger it grows.
Over time, fears start covertly ruling our lives.
Everyone expects us to be perfectly happy, and we play along with that expectation. Meanwhile, beneath the surface, we feel paralyzed - our potential unrealized and our lives marked by deep dissatisfaction.
Gradually, we adapt to this reality by telling ourselves how much better our life is than it was pre-wealth.
We lose hope that life offers more than our comfortable prison.
In the meantime, without purpose, our sense of relevance and significance fades.
Confidence erodes. Self-esteem declines.
We feel obsolete as skills atrophy and experience becomes outdated.
We fear failure more than ever, retreating further into the deceptive comfort of our golden cage.
Breaking Free
Financial success often traps us in a paradox – wealthy yet unfulfilled, free yet directionless.
Resolving this paradox requires that we re-claim control over our energy and motivation by taking three deliberate steps:
Building truly holistic safety: physical, emotional, financial, and social.
Clearing the cognitive fog. Learning what fulfillment is and how to build it. Redefining success, freedom and wealth in ways that reflect our new reality.
Seeking inspiration deliberately. Surrounding ourselves with people, ideas, and experiences that consistently spark our energy and fuel our pursuit of purpose.
As we overcome these barriers, our energy gradually awakens.
We find ourselves drawn to meaningful contribution not from fear, but from genuine desire to share our best with the world.
That irresistible pull toward purpose becomes stronger each day. Our actions align naturally with our deepest values.
The wealth that once confined us transforms into a powerful amplifier of our impact.
Financial success finally delivers its ultimate promise: deep and lasting satisfaction.
This journey demands effort but offers incomparable rewards.
We cannot afford to miss the extraordinary opportunity our hard-earned financial freedom has created - the chance to build a deeply fulfilling, meaningful, and impactful life on our own terms.
A life truly worth living.
